“Learn to be calm, learn to be positive …!” – Dr. Chockalingam

Dr. Chockalingam, Cardiologist, Professor& Head of the department of cardiology in the Government General Hospital, Chennai

Past is like a broken pot; future is like a cat sitting on the fence; only the present belongs to us. The present can be compared to the instrument ‘veena’. If its strings are handled carefully and tightened with the correct tension, we can hear a titillating sound from it. Similarly, if we handle our present carefully, we can hope to have a tension-free and pleasant future. My section functions from the eighth floor of the Government Hospital building. But, I never use the lift. Once, the lift-operator invited me to come to the lift so that I could ‘go up’ early. I told him that I didn’t want to ‘go up’ that early! He understood the inner meaning of my words and gave me a hearty smile! Physical exercise is equally important like food, water and air. You should never be ‘caught’ by doctors or policemen or lawyers, because all your wealth will go away in expenditure! If you don’t want to be caught, you should remember three ‘mantras’ – pure thoughts, healthy food and regular exercise. If you follow all these three strictly, you can live beyond 100 years even! I am repeating only the words of the ‘gnanis’. India tops the list of deaths due to heart attack. The toll includes people in the age group of 25 – 30 contributing a good percentage. Every one hour ninety people are dying of heart attack. I expect this interview would do something to end this tragic situation.

Q: Where are the heart, the mind and the brain located? We ask people ‘Don’t you have heart?’ Please explain heart and mind …

A: This is a good question. Mind is what we make. It is created by our own thoughts only. It has no physical form. But the heart is referred to as the mind. Mind has got no matter and for any matter, you should become ‘never mind’! You keep these words in your mind. Thoughts are born at the brain but it is the mind which operates the brain. The heart is just a pump made of muscles. They consider the heart as one with the mind because we say ‘sweetheart’ etc.! But nobody says ‘sweet-brain’! The heartbeat varies according to the positive or negative thoughts that occur in the mind. It is the mind that controls both the brain and the heart. The mind should listen to intelligence and the body should listen to the mind. Only if these three coordinate with each other, life can be saved.
