Potpourri of tidbits about Tamil cinema - Actor Kamal Hassan

Kamal happens to be the first ever cinema artist to donate his body for the research use of the students studying in a medical college. In a simple function arranged before his fans at the Rajkamal office on the Independence Day of 2002 (15/08/2002), he has signed the required deed to donate his body to the Chennai Medical College. His first daughter Sruthi has signed the deed as witness.

While handing over the signed document to Mr.Ravindra Nath, the Director of the Chennai Medical College, Kamal, expressed his happiness and stated that his body will be used as a book by the research students in the latter years. He expressed his desire to use the occasion to create awareness about body donation after death. He sarcastically said that most of the time cinema artists were used in advertisements to boost the sales of other products such as cool drinks, jewels or ice creams, since he did not act in such advertisements he was promoting himself as a product to disseminate the knowledge on ‘body donation’.

At the end of the function, being influenced by the chain of events, I too was convinced to donate my body and conveyed my desire to Kamal. Though appreciated my idea, having known my conservative family background, he had asked me to get the concurrence of my family before venturing such an attempt.

Expressing happiness about my conviction Kamal has asked the President of his Fans Association Mr.Gunaseelan to complete the necessary formalities. Nearly after a week ready with the required documents Gunaseelan has called me from Kamal’s office and I signed the filled-in document along with my wife. Kamal has received the signed document before his fans in a small function organized at his office on 28/08/2002, and latter handed over it to the Director himself.
