Diabetes will not trouble you if kept under control …!”- Dr. V. Balaji, Diabetes specialist, Apollo Hospitals
“It is a wrong notion that diabetics cannot have normal food like others. They can eat normally but should avoid food that is rich in fat or sugar. And, they should take the prescribed tablets regularly without fail. They should go for walk daily either in the morning or evening. Diabetes is not a disease, but once the condition sets in, it will be permanent, it cannot be cured. One of my patients, an elderly person was also under a wrong notion about diabetes. When I explained things to him, he was a bit relieved. He has shed some kilograms in weight. He doesn’t touch items that are rich in sugar or fat. He takes a lot of vegetables, fruits that have less sugar, wheat and less rice. He is taking the medications and insulin regularly. He takes the required quantity of protein, carbohydrates and includes fish and chicken in his diet to some extent. He’ll be giving up non-vegetarian food soon as he is already old and doesn’t want to have digestive problems.
If diabetes is not kept under control, many of the vital organs will be damaged progressively. Eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves and legs will be affected. If we ignore diabetes, we’ll be running a great risk. When a person is diagnosed with diabetes, tests will be done to check the condition of his vital organs. Medicines can be prescribed to arrest further damage, but their condition cannot be restored fully. So, it is very essential that diabetics should always be alert to keep the sugar level at normal. If there’s burning sensation in legs, the doctor should be consulted immediately. If the sugar level is not controlled, the arteries in the legs will be blocked and blood supply is interrupted. The person will not have sensation even if his soles are pricked by nails or stones. Now, that medicine has advanced to a great level, we are able to save diabetics from problems in legs. But one should not be negligent.
