A: It is a very good habit to talk nicely to people. Many believe that it is a favor done to the other person. This is a wrong notion. Talking nicely to others is a favor that we do to ourselves. If we make it a policy not to hurt others by our words, the skill to talk nicely will come to us automatically.

Q: When self-confidence goes up, faith in God comes down?(S. Maheswaran, Bangalore)

A: Many, who are staunch believers in God, have self-confidence too. I feel that faith in God doesn’t mean to blindly believe that He’ll take care of everything. Self-confidence is the positive approach to believe that we can do things and face any situation. My vote is only for self-confidence combined with faith in God.

Q: Should there be another person behind the success of every person?(Navya Maran, Vellore)

A: The question doesn’t arise when the success is achieved by a team. But the success of any individual is not possible without guidance or prompting. The coach has equal share in the success of an athlete who wins a race. Chess champion Anand’s mother has contributed much to the success of her son. No individual can claim full credit for his success.

Q: They say bottle gourd in books has no use in cooking! If it is true, how can books be taken as our guides?(G. Arun, Chennai)

A: The adage means that the bottle gourd drawn in books cannot be used in cooking. It is through education that one gets the intelligence to understand things. The adage could be interpreted as insisting that theoretical knowledge should be supplemented by experience.

Q: Normally, very intelligent people refuse to concur with others that easily, why?(Chitra Mohan, Rajapalayam)

A: Intelligent people have the capacity of profound thinking. If others think from one angle, intelligent people will think of the same thing in different ways. We cannot find fault with these people for their justification or arguments. They cannot be considered as rigid.
