Potpourri of tidbits about Tamil cinema - Kalaignar Karunanidhi

Kalaignar Karunanidhi, Potpourri of titbits about Tamil cinema, kalyanamalai tamil weekly magazine

He recalled ‘I first met M.G.R. when I was engaged to write story & dialogue for the film Rajakumar produced by Jupitar Pictures of Coimbatore. I saw him clad in Kadhar shirt and wearing thulasi chain. We became friends and became closer. He gave me books written by Gandhi and in return I presented him books wrote by Anna’.

When T.R. Sundaram planned to film the drama Mandhrikumari I had sent word through M.G.Chakrapani to call his brother M.G.R. I took M.G.R. to Sundaram and recommended him for the hero role in Mandhirikumari. Sundaram was not happy with a small dent that appeared over the lower chin of M.G.R. and was reluctant to sign him.

I took time to persuade Sundaram and at last he has agreed to sign M.G.R. for the film. To cover the dent part at the lower jaw a small beard was used. The film when released became a huge hit. Kalaignar heartily remarked ‘in fact it was the dent that added beauty to M.G.R.’s face and made all his films great successes’.

Kalaignar recalled how the films such as Rajakumari, Abimanyu, Mandhirikumari, Maruthanattu Ilavarasi, Naam, Malaikallan, Puthumaipithan, Arasilangumari, Kanji thalaivan and Engal Thangam in which M.G.R. has acted were all become hits.

Kalaignar wrote story and dialogue for a film titled 'Friday' and M.G.R. has acted in the film for about 10 days. The film was dropped in between and never completed due to unknown reasons. It may be a question in every one’s mind why Kalaignar did not attempt to rewrite the story for the present generation and rope in some of the younger actors for the role. But he actually did it.
