Potpourri of tidbits about Tamil cinema - Kalaignar Karunanidhi

Kalaignar Karunanidhi, Potpourri of titbits about Tamil cinema, kalyanamalai tamil weekly magazine

At the end Kalaignar said 'think about those benefits such as reduced taxes and facilities for outdoor shooting, reduction in levied charges you all got before five years and how you were able to see me with ease or how I saw you without restrictions when compared to the present days'. I know you are missing those facilities and wanted to have them again. I join you as one who was in cinema field for a longer period, as one who is currently in it and as one who will continue to be in it, in requesting the present government to reinstate the facilities that you have lost. The depth of Kalaignar's speech has depicted his love and involvement towards cinema.

After assuming the chief ministership for the fifth time he kept on extending all the benefits and concessions to Tamil cinema. Over and above that, after penning the story and dialogue for Kannamma, he wrote story & dialogue for the films such as Pasakkiligal, Uliyien Osai, Penn Singam and Ponnar Sangar with the same level of zest he has shown for writing his first film Rajakumari in 1947.

I would like to place before you some of the interesting events that took place during his journey into Tamil cinema in his own words and in the words shared by other artists. I consider these as chosen pearls from Kalaignar's cinema experience.

Kopperum Chozhan and Pisiranthaiyar

It is a world known fact that Kalaignar Karunanidhi and Nadigar Thilakam Sivaji Ganesan are inseparable close friends. Once when comparing the friendship of Kalaignar towards him, Sivaji Ganesan equated it with that of mothers love. He said that the Thiruvalluvar's Kural couplet "iendra pozhuthin perithuvakkum thanmaganai chandron ena ketta thai" will become applicable to a mother as well as to a friend. Sivaji added keeping ourselves in the position of a mother both of us feel elated and happy about the well being of the other. A good friend will always be bestowed with a quality of not frequenting his friend if he is well placed at a higher level. Because he will not want any one to deduce or talk that such purpose of visit is only to seek favours and think ill of such friendship.

He added ‘I had never been to St.George Fort to see my friend Karunanidhi but he has come to my house a number of times to enquire about my well being and it shows his magnanimity. It will not be redundant or out of place if I compare our friendship with that of Kopperum Chozhan and Pisiranthaiyar. Kalaignar is a ruler like Kopperunchozhan and I am like Pisiranthaiyar an artist.

I always feel proud and right of being the one and only actor to have acted and spoken the dialogues of Kalaignar. For my acting in the roles as Gunasekaran of Parasakthi, as Manoharan, Paranthaman, Socrates, as Salim or Seran Senguttuvan I spoke the Tamil written by Kalaignar and people supported me’ The above words of Nadigar Thilagam still rings in my ears and I feel goose bumps when ever I remember it.

Kailaignar, by erecting a beautiful statue of Sivaji Ganesan, close to Marina, Chennai, has prooved his fathomless friendship with him. Just two days before the installation of the statue Kalaignar went to the place of the Sculptur Mani Nagappa, felt the statue remembering his friendship with Nadigarthilagam and returned home with moist eyes.
