My ‘arangetram’ was held at Kumbakonam. When my performance was held at Chennai, there was very limited audience only. The ‘sabha’ people told my father that if I wanted to become a famous dancer I had to enter cinema. My father put me at Vijayanthimala’s ‘Natyaalayaa’ for advanced training in the art.

My father produced a Kannada film ‘Mohamanasu’ with Pandari Bai in the lead role. The story revolved around dancing. He took one Mr. Narayanan as his working partner. My brother was not favorably inclined and opposed my father’s idea. And, due to some other reasons, the project was shelved in the middle. At that juncture, film journalist Naveenan told my father that it would be better to get me roles in films produced by others rather than himself producing. And, he introduced me to director Sridhar. Sridhar was preparing for the film ‘Kaadalikka neramillai’. He shot the dance sequence ‘Anubhavam pudhumai’ with me as the heroine but he was not satisfied with my performance because my expressions of pining for my love were not convincing. But he promised a role in his next film ‘Vennira aadai’. He kept up his word and the movie, released in the year 1965 was a run-away hit. It catapulted me to fame and recognition and there was a plethora of offers. But I was not really that interested in acting. I wanted to join college. But the then popular Malayam director Kunjakko pressured me and made me act in his film ‘Kaattu thulasi’. The film was a huge hit and I started getting numerous offers in the industry.

In the year 1968, I acted in the Sivaji starrer ‘Lakshmi kalyaanam’. Then happened the MGR – starrer ‘Rahasiya police - 115’. ‘Poovaa thalaiyaa’, ‘Mannippu’, ‘Vairaagyam’, ‘Veettukku veedu’, ‘Anbukku oru annan’, ‘Sudarum sooraavaliyum’, ‘Needhi thevan’, ‘Thanga surangam’, ‘Enga mama’, ‘Vegulippenn’, ‘Thangaikkaaga’, ‘Anbu sahodharargal’, ‘Aval’, ‘Indr pol endrum vaazhga’, ‘Idhayakkani’, etc. followed. I worked day and night without rest.

I produced my own film ‘Avalukku nigar avalae’ in the year 1974. I did three roles in the movie. Ravichandran was the hero. ‘Madurai’ Thirumaran wrote the dialogue and directed. I incurred heavy loss. Another tragedy followed. In a car accident near Kerala, my brother Raghavan died and I was seriously injured. I was admitted to Ramana Clinic in Chennai. I was mentally upset quivering with despair and I decided to forget cinema in my life.
