Kamal Hassan, Potpourri of titbits about Tamil cinema, kalyanamalai tamil weekly magazine

'Ulaga Nayagan' the title most appropriately suites Kamal Hassan. He is a versatile actor who has reached the peak in acting. He is known for his technical knowledge and understanding of cinema industry and has proved his potential in writing.

He was born to Srinivasa Iyengar and Rajalakshmi Ammal on 7/11/1954 at Paramakkudi, Tamilnadu and made his entry into the Tamil cinema at the tender age of six through the film Kalathur Kannamma, produced by the famous AVM banner. His completing of 50 years in the Indian cinema was celebrated in a fitting manner by his fans, cinema fraternity, media and the websites. None of the actors before Kamal have enjoyed such an appreciation and honour from the cinema fraternity and the media.

Starting with Kalathur Kannamma, Kamal Hassan has acted in 135 Tamil films, 19 Telegu movies, 41 Malayalam films, 6 Kanada films, 18 Hindi films and 1 Bengali film, a total of 220 films as on 18/09/2009. I wish and look forward Kamal to act in a few hundred more films and achieve new feats.

I met Kamal for the first time in 1984 during the filming of Bharathi Raja directed ‘Top Tukker’. The title of the film was subsequently changed into ‘Oru Kaithien Diary’. I have been closely moving with Kamal for almost 25 years now. I always cherish and feel fortunate to have the friendship of Kamal who is totally dedicated to Indian cinema.

I have found, that among the other known cinema artists, after Makkal Thilagam M.G.R. and Makkal Kalaignar Jaishankar, Kamal only enjoys the close rapport with media. I am happy to share some of the most important events that took place in all these years during my association with Kamal.

The famous music critique late Subbudu was an ardent fan of Kamal and will always ask me to arrange for a meeting with Kamal during his Chennai visits in December. Kamal who reveres his writing flow and in-depth knowledge and fearless comments also has expressed his desire to meet Subbudu. Due to continuous shooting schedules of Kamal, much to the delight of Subbudu, the meeting was finally arranged in 1977 during December music season. Subbudu met Kamal on 26/12/1997 at AVM Studio during the shooting of the film Kadhala Kadhala.
